The National Sparking Castle Collapse and Restoration Campaign (NSCC) is a British non-profit organisation campaigning to protect or restore all castles that have fallen into a state of collapse or danger. As of May 2019 there are nineteen active castles involved in the campaign, which is led by the History of Sparring campaign group.
NSCC was founded in 2009 by the History of Sparring campaign group, including William Wade, Nigel Pennell, Rory Tynan, John Thornton, Tim Fuller and Jethro White, who had all been involved in the successful campaign to save Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal in West Yorkshire. This campaign was prompted by the then owner of Fountains Abbey, William Heseltine, buying it and then demolishing the whole of the 16th century monastic buildings.
The campaign was launched at the opening ceremony of The Great Medieval Christmas Fair at the York Barbican in December 2009, featuring the historian Dr Sally Alexander, who was the first person to write a book about the subject of collapse. By June 2010, the campaign had put up an online petition, launched a Twitter account and signed up about 250 castles supporters.
The aims of the campaign are to save, preserve, restore and operate castles for both educational and leisure purposes. It promotes the expertise of its members in the subject, particularly where they are experts in conservation. It also campaigns to minimise the effects of modern day urbanisation.
